Manhattan Child & Adolescent Psychologist

Professional Experiences

Dr. Joshua Rosenthal is a New York & New Jersey Licensed Clinical Psychologist who helps children, adolescents, parents, and families with depression, anxiety, OCD, Bipolar Disorder, Asperger’s Disorder, phobias, social skills problems, school issues, divorce & separation, relationship problems, anger, and behavioral problems. Prior to and during his doctoral training in clinical psychology, Dr. Rosenthal worked and trained at several prominent hospitals, including Yale New Haven Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Dr. Rosenthal is also the former Staff Psychologist & Mental Health Liaison for Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, NJ.

Style & Approach

With formal training in several theoretical orientations (i.e., cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and systems family therapy), Dr. Rosenthal is able to integrate different treatment approaches for the benefit of each patient. He utilizes empirically-based treatments and helps patients by teaching new skills, building distress tolerance, enhancing awareness and communication, facilitating personal insight, and challenging maladaptive relationship and thinking patterns. Dr. Rosenthal employs an active therapeutic stance to facilitate long-lasting, positive change. Here are two additional tenets of Dr. Rosenthal’s clinical work:

  • Earlier is better – Outcomes improve dramatically for nearly every disorder or condition when patients seek help sooner rather than later. This applies to children, adults, and couples. Patients should not wait while the problem festers or until things become unmanageable. It is better to be cautious and intervene early to possibly prevent a bigger problem.
  • Input vs. Output – You get out of treatment what you put into treatment. Dr. Rosenthal is active in engaging and motivating his patients, but positive change requires mutual effort and determination. Patients who show a consistent drive to attend sessions, challenge maladaptive patterns, and apply new skills will see the most benefit from their treatment.
